Shopify Accessibility: What Merchants Must Know

Shopify themes look polished but routinely ship accessibility gaps, and it’s the merchant, not Shopify, who carries the legal risk.

Product images and alt text

Add descriptive alt text to product images in the admin. With large catalogs this is the highest-volume issue — auto-generated or missing alt text is a common scan finding.

Theme interactions

Quick-view modals, cart drawers, and variant pickers frequently trap keyboard focus or lack accessible names. Test the buy flow with the keyboard only.

Contrast and badges

Sale badges, sold-out labels, and button colors often fail contrast. Adjust theme colors to meet at least 4.5:1 for text.
